Most home computer networks use only one WiFi router, adding a second wireless router makes sense in a few conditions. A second WiFi router is used to upgrade a wired home network to assist wireless devices.

An additional router can extend the wireless range of your home network to eliminate dead spots and to network a wired device that is placed quite far away from the original wired router.

In addition, a second WiFi router creates a sub-network within a home to stream video and download data without slowing down the connections to others. Making it all work as per your requirements, you need to flow a few steps.

Position of the Second Router

When you are trying to set up a new WiFi router, try to place it near to your computer that helps to initialize configuration. Both wireless and wired routers configured well from a computer connected to a router with the help of Ethernet cable. Once the set up is done, move your home WiFi router to another location. But before proceeding for set up process try to update your Netgear router firmware version.

Connect a Second WiFi Router

Home WiFi routers can be connected via an Ethernet cable in the same way as wired routers. Connecting two home wired routers over the wireless network is also possible. The second router functions as an access point.

The second WiFi router has to be set up in client mode to use its full routing functionality, a mode that many home WiFi routers do not support. Therefore, consider the router model documentation to configure the client mode.

WiFi Channel Configuration for Home WiFi Routers

If you are trying to set up both wireless routers, then their WiFi signal can cause interference with each other, causing unpredictable network slowdowns and dropped connections.

Every wireless router uses a defined WiFi frequency by default depending as per the model and manufacturer, but these settings can be easily changed in the router console. Just visit http://routerlogin.net to specific WiFi frequency ranges to eliminate signal interference. Try to configure first WiFi router to at 1 or 6 channel and the second WiFi router to use channel 11.

Use the Second WiFi Router as an Access Point

The above procedures allow you to add an additional router to support a sub-network within the home network. This helps to maintain an extra level of control over specific devices.

Alternatively, a second WiFi router can be configured as a wireless or wired access point. This allows devices to connect to the second WiFi router as usual but not create any sub-network.

IP Configuration of a Second WiFi Router

Home WiFi routers work on default IP address. The second Netgear router IP does not require any changes unless it is used as an access point or as a network switch.

Configure a Second WiFi Router without Sub-Network

To set up a new WiFi router as a switch, firstly plug an Ethernet cable into any free port of second WiFi router and connect it to the first WiFi router.

To set up a wireless router as an access point, configure the device as a bridge or repeater mode linked to the first WiFi router.
